An SUV with four passenger seats and four bags, and the first car in this fleet that a party of four actually fits. It also drives all four wheels, which matters on perhaps a fifth of the journeys we run and not at all on the rest — so here is which.
The roads that need it
The climb to Khinalig is the clearest case: a narrow mountain road that gains height fast and is nobody's idea of fun in a low car after rain. The last stretch into Lahij is rough enough to be worth a higher ride. Shahdag in winter is the third. On those three, an SUV is not an upgrade, it is the right tool.
Where it makes no difference at all
The airport run. Gobustan. Shamakhi, Gabala, Sheki — all of it is good asphalt, and a saloon does the job in the same time for less money. We would rather say that than sell you ground clearance you will not use.
Four seats and four bags
Four passengers with a case each, or four people plus the boot filled properly for a week away. That is a genuine step up from the sedans, all of which stop at three, and it is the difference between one car and two for a family.
On board
Climate control, a hotspot, water, USB and an English-speaking driver, plus the all-wheel drive itself. The list is the same in every vehicle we run except that last item.
When something else is the better answer
Three of you on tarmac: the Hyundai Sonata or the quieter BYD Destroyer 5, both cheaper. Five or more, whatever the road: the seven-seat Mercedes Vito.
