How to Get from Baku to Quba

Quba is 168 km north of Baku and about two and a half hours away on the coastal highway — the easiest long drive out of the city, flat and fast almost the whole way, with the mountains arriving only at the end. It is also the gateway leg: Khinalig, Laza and the Shahdag road all start from here.

A car with a driver costs a fixed sum for the vehicle and can carry on into the mountains the same day, which the bus cannot. The intercity bus from Baku's main terminal is frequent enough on this direction to be a real option if you are travelling light and staying in the town itself. Either way, note what the road surface changes into past Quba: the climb to Khinalig is a separate proposition and needs a car with the clearance for it.

Across the river from Quba is Qirmizi Qasaba, the Red Village — one of the few places outside Israel with a continuous Mountain Jewish community — and it is a ten-minute drive rather than an excursion. Our Khinalig and Quba day trip covers both the town and the mountain road in one day if you would rather not arrange the second leg yourself.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long does Baku to Quba take?
About two and a half hours for 168 km on the northern highway. It is the quickest of the long runs out of Baku — the road is flat and in good condition nearly all the way.
Is there a bus from Baku to Quba?
Yes, from Baku's main bus terminal, and this is one of the better-served directions. It suits travelling light to the town centre; it does not suit continuing into the mountains, where there is no scheduled service.
Can we continue to Khinalig the same day?
Yes, and most people do. The mountain road from Quba is another hour and a half and climbs steeply — it is priced as its own leg, and in winter it needs a vehicle with clearance.
What is the Red Village?
Qirmizi Qasaba, across the river from Quba: one of the few settlements outside Israel with a continuous Mountain Jewish community, with synagogues and a museum. Ten minutes from the town centre.
