5.0 7

An hour south of Baku the Gobustan reserve lines up three of Azerbaijan's strangest sights in a single easy day: prehistoric rock carvings cut into the cliffs over thousands of years, fields of cold bubbling mud volcanoes, and the wind-scoured semi-desert of the Caspian coast. Here are the Gobustan day trips from Baku you can book online — run by local guides, and back in the city the same afternoon.

What the day covers

  • Gobustan petroglyph reserve & museum — a UNESCO-listed open-air gallery left long before writing existed.
  • The mud volcanoes — dozens of grey cones that gurgle and spit cool clay; Azerbaijan has more of them than any country on earth.
  • The drive itself — flat coast and semi-desert you won't see near the city centre.

How far is Gobustan from Baku?

About 65 km, roughly an hour each way. That leaves the rest of the day for the carvings, the museum and the volcanoes without a pre-dawn start.

Not taking a tour? The road out of Baku is 65 km. How to Get from Baku to Gobustan sets the bus, the hired car and the guided day side by side.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Gobustan day trip take?
From half a day to a full day. Gobustan is about an hour from Baku, so even a half-day covers the petroglyph reserve and museum; a full day adds the mud volcanoes and a slower pace.
Do I need a 4x4 for the mud volcanoes?
The track to the volcano field is rough and many operators switch to a local off-road vehicle for the last stretch. Where that is a separate cost, the tour page says so.
Are the petroglyphs and the museum both worth it?
Yes — the museum explains what you are looking at and the carved cliffs are a short walk beyond it. Seeing one without the other is the usual regret.
When is the best time to visit Gobustan?
Spring and autumn are most comfortable. Summer is hot and shadeless on the cliffs, so start early; winter is mild but greyer.
