How to Get from Baku to Gobustan

Gobustan is 65 km south of Baku, an hour on the coastal road past the oil fields. The reserve holds some 6,000 rock carvings across a hillside of fallen boulders, the oldest of them around 12,000 years old, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007.

This is the direction where the choice of vehicle matters most. Buses run to Gobustan town, but the museum and the petroglyph field are a few kilometres beyond it and the mud volcanoes are further still, down an unsurfaced track — arriving by bus means arranging a local car at the other end anyway. A car with a driver covers all three points in one movement and waits at each; the fare below is for the vehicle and the whole loop, not per stop.

The mud volcanoes are the part people underestimate: the track to them is rough enough that ordinary saloons are sometimes turned back, and after rain it can be impassable. Our Gobustan and mud volcanoes day trip includes the transfer, the reserve and the fire sites at Yanardag and Ateshgah with a guide, which is the usual way of seeing all of it in one day.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get to Gobustan from Baku?
About an hour for 65 km on the coastal road. The petroglyph reserve is a few kilometres past the town itself.
Can I get to Gobustan by bus?
To the town, yes. Not to the reserve or the mud volcanoes, which are beyond it — you would need to arrange a local car on arrival, which is usually what makes people book the whole journey instead.
Do the mud volcanoes need a special vehicle?
The track to them is unsurfaced and rutted. Higher-clearance vehicles manage it comfortably; after heavy rain it can be closed altogether. We will tell you on the day if it is not passable.
How long should we allow at the reserve?
An hour and a half covers the museum and the main petroglyph trail. Add another hour if you are going on to the mud volcanoes.
