How to Get from Baku to Sheki

Sheki is 305 km from Baku, the longest of the standard runs out of the city: about four hours and twenty minutes if you drive it straight through. The road follows the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus the whole way, and the last stretch after Gabala is the pretty one — walnut groves, then the town itself stacked up against the mountains.

A car with a driver is the version that lets you break the journey: it is a long enough leg that most people want to stop, and stopping is free when the car is yours for the day. Prices below are per vehicle for the whole journey, agreed before you set off. The bus from Baku's main terminal costs a fraction of it and takes appreciably longer, with a fixed departure you have to plan your morning around. The train exists on this corridor but its station is well outside Sheki itself, so budget for the last leg separately.

Almost everything worth seeing between the two is on the road rather than off it: Diri Baba and Shamakhi in the first hour, then Ismayilli and the Lahij turn-off, then Gabala. A full day with a guide is the Sheki day trip, which is thirteen hours door to door and explains why most people arriving by transfer stay the night instead.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Baku to Sheki?
About four hours twenty for 305 km, driven straight through. With a lunch stop and one sight on the way, plan on six.
Is there a bus or a train to Sheki?
Both exist. Buses leave from Baku's main terminal on a timetable that changes seasonally; the train on this corridor stops some distance from the town, so you will need onward transport at the other end. Neither delivers you to your hotel, which is the difference people are usually paying for.
Is Sheki worth doing as a day trip?
It is nine hours of driving there and back. Our own day trip runs thirteen hours door to door — it works, but a night in Sheki turns the same road into half the effort.
What is on the way?
Diri Baba, Shamakhi, Ismayilli and Gabala, in that order, all on the road rather than a detour. The Lahij turn-off is also on this route if you want to add a mountain village.
Can the driver wait and bring us back?
Yes. Waiting is priced per night rather than per hour on a leg this long; tell us the plan and we will quote both shapes before you choose.
