How to Get from Baku to Shahdag

Shahdag is 200 km north of Baku and about three hours away: the fast coastal highway as far as Quba, then a purpose-built mountain road that climbs to the resort. It is the country's winter sports centre — gondolas, marked pistes, hotels at the foot of the lifts — and it stays open through the summer for walking and the cable car, when the same road is an easy drive instead of a weather question.

There is no scheduled bus to the resort. Buses run to Quba, which is 168 km of the 200, and from there you would be negotiating a taxi for the climb — in January, with ski bags, at whatever the driver asks. A car with a driver covers the whole thing in one movement; the table below prices it per vehicle, from 180 AZN for a sedan to 345 for the largest van, agreed before you set off rather than at a kerb in the cold.

Two things about the season. The mountain road is maintained but it is a mountain road: in heavy snow it wants clearance, and occasionally it closes, in which case we tell you before you book. And luggage arithmetic changes in winter — ski bags take the space that suitcases would, so the car that fits your group in July may not fit it in February. Our Shahdag and Candy Cane Mountains day trip covers the same road with a guide if the drive itself is what you came for.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

Somewhere not on this list, several stops, or a driver for the whole day? Tell us the route

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Baku to Shahdag?
About three hours for 200 km. Two and a half of those are fast highway to Quba; the last stretch is the climb to the resort, which is slower and slower still in snow.
Is there a bus from Baku to Shahdag?
Not to the resort. Intercity buses reach Quba, 168 km of the 200, and the remaining climb has no scheduled service — you would be arranging a taxi on arrival, which in winter with ski luggage is the part people regret.
What does the road need in winter?
Clearance and winter tyres. It is maintained and usually open, but heavy snow closes it occasionally. We check conditions before the day and say so rather than setting off and turning back.
Is Shahdag worth going to outside the ski season?
Yes — the gondola runs in summer and the walking up there is the reason a lot of people come in July, when Baku is at its worst. The drive is also far easier without snow.
Can the driver wait and bring us back the same day?
On a day trip yes, and it is the usual arrangement. If you are staying at the resort, tell us the dates and we price the return leg separately rather than leaving a car idle in a car park.
