A village at 2,300 metres with its own language, reached by a road that was only paved in the last fifteen years.
Khinalig (Xınalıq) is one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in Europe and, for most of its history, one of the hardest to reach. It sits at about 2,300 metres in a bowl of bare mountain, and the people there speak Ketsh — a language of their own, related to nothing spoken in the next valley.
The day goes through Quba (Guba), 170 km north of Baku and the centre of the apple country. Across the river from the town is Krasnaya Sloboda, one of the last places outside Israel where a Jewish community has lived continuously in one settlement for centuries.
From Quba it is another 60 km and about an hour and a half, climbing the whole way through the Qudyalchay gorge. The road was a dirt track within living memory; it is asphalt now, but it is narrow, high-sided and worth the window seat.
Houses are stacked so that one roof is the next one's yard. Everything is stone, there are no trees at this altitude, and the fuel stacked against the walls is dried dung. There is a small museum, a mosque said to be a thousand years old, and a view down the valley that is the reason people come.
Around twelve hours, six of them driving. The village is at altitude and the weather changes fast — take a layer more than the forecast suggests, even in July. The group is capped at 18.

Getting there on your own: 230 km from Baku by road. How to Get from Baku to Khinalig compares a car with a driver, the intercity bus and a guided day.

Two and a half hours up the coast and then inland into the apple orchards.
A stop in the town and, across the bridge, the settlement that has held a Jewish community for several hundred years.
An hour and a half of climbing on a narrow road cut into the side of the valley. This is the part of the day the photographs come from.
Two hours in the village: the stacked houses, the old mosque, the museum, and the view back down the range.
Down the same road and back along the coast, arriving in the evening.
