Overview
A group day trip from Baku to Shusha and Khankendi — the heart of Karabakh in one day, about 14 hours, ₼120 a person. Entry to Karabakh is by permit, and we take care of it: send your passport details at least two days before the trip and the paperwork is ours.
Baku to Shusha: the distance and the road
Shusha is about 360 km from Baku, four and a half to five hours each way — across the plains of central Azerbaijan and up into the Karabakh mountains. You set off early, so the long stretch is behind you by the time the sightseeing starts, and the guide uses the road to tell the story of the places ahead.
The Karabakh permit: what you need
Visitors enter Karabakh with a permit issued against their passport. You do not apply for it — we do. Book at least two days ahead, send your passport details when we ask, and bring the same passport on the day.
Khankendi
The first stops are in Khankendi: the Nana Baba monument and the Parliament building as the road passes through the centre, and then the memorial to the victims of Khojaly, where the guide tells the history of February 1992.
Shusha tour: what you will see
Most of the day belongs to Shusha, Azerbaijan's cultural capital, built on a rock high above the valleys.
- The fortress walls that gave the town its reputation.
- Three bronze busts — the poet Natavan, the singer Bulbul and the composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli — still pitted with bullet marks.
- Yukhari Govhar Agha mosque, nineteenth-century, with its two minarets.
- Natavan's house museum and the spring that carries her name.
- Jidir plain, the flat meadow at the cliff edge, and the gorge below it.
- The mausoleum of Molla Panah Vagif, the eighteenth-century poet and vizier.
What the ₼120 covers
- The entry permit, arranged for you
- Air-conditioned transport there and back
- A guide speaking English and Russian
- Entrance fees at the stops on the route
Meals are not in the price: you pay for food on the way yourself, along with any souvenirs.
Booking, meeting and cancelling
The tour runs every day in a group of up to 18. It starts and ends in central Baku; the exact meeting point and time are sent to you after booking. You can cancel without charge until 24 hours before you leave. Bring the passport you booked with, comfortable shoes for Shusha's stone streets and a warm layer — the town sits high in the mountains and the air is fresher than in Baku.
