Overview

Baku was built facing the sea, and it is the one thing you cannot see properly from inside it. Walk the Boulevard and the city is a wall of buildings at your shoulder; go out four hundred metres and it arranges itself — the Old City low on its hill, the Flame Towers above it, the whole crescent of the bay in one line.

That is the entire point of this trip. It is short and it is not a day out — forty minutes on the water, most of them spent with a camera up.

What you actually see

The bay is a crescent, so the boat is never far from the shore and the skyline turns slowly as you go. The Flame Towers dominate from the water in a way they do not from the street. Below them the Old City walls and the Maiden Tower sit at a level that finally makes sense of how the town grew. Out in the bay is Böyük Zira, the island the Russians called Nargin — flat, uninhabited, and closer than it looks.

The boat

A small vessel with an open upper deck, up to ten people, and a cup of Azerbaijani tea served while you sail. Nobody is fighting for a rail. The guide points things out rather than delivering a lecture — at forty minutes there is no room for one, and the view is doing the work.

There is an enclosed panoramic salon as well as the open deck, which is what makes this workable when the Caspian wind gets up rather than a trip you cancel. The boat carries life jackets, and there is a ramp at boarding for anyone who cannot manage a step — the only thing in our catalogue that makes that provision, and worth knowing if the rest of this list has been ruling itself out for you.

When to go

Late afternoon, if you have the choice. The light comes off the water onto the city rather than into your lens, and the Flame Towers begin their light sequence as it goes dark. Midday is bright and flat; the sea itself does not care either way.

Where it starts

At the Marine Terminal on the Boulevard — walkable from most of the centre, and the same seafront park you have probably already strolled. Allow a few minutes at the pier before departure.
