Overview

The Absheron peninsula does not end at a cliff or a town. It thins out into a sand spit — Shahdili — that runs on into the Caspian until it is a line of shingle a few metres wide with sea on both sides. It is the easternmost land in the country, it is inside a national park, and almost nobody goes there.

That is the appeal. Forty minutes from a capital city you are on an empty coast with no buildings in any direction.

What the day is

Six hours, most of it outdoors and a good part of it walking on level but soft ground. This is not a hike in the mountaineering sense — there is no climbing and no gradient — but sand takes more out of your legs than a path does, and there is no shade at any point.

The birds, and the seals

The spit is a stopping place on a migration route, and the shallow water either side of it collects waders, gulls and, in the right months, flamingos standing in the shallows in numbers that surprise people. Caspian seals also use this coast, and seeing one is the thing everybody hopes for.

We are not going to promise you a seal. They are wild, the sea is large, and a guide who guarantees wildlife is a guide who has stopped telling you the truth. What we can say is that the cooler months are better for both the seals and the flamingos, and that we will tell you honestly what has been showing up before you book a date around it.

Practical

Closed shoes, sun cover and more water than you think — there is nothing to buy once you are out on the spit. Binoculars are worth carrying if you own a pair. The spit lies inside Absheron National Park; ask us about the entry arrangement for your date and we will confirm it rather than guess on a page.

Group or private

The shared departure is ₼95 a seat. Privately it is ₼170 for one person, ₼220 for two and ₼250 for three, which crosses over at two people — and on a walk where you might want to stop for twenty minutes because something is out on the water, a private departure is worth more than it usually is.

  2. To the end of the peninsula

Out past the last of the settlements, into the national park.

  3. Out along the spit

Frequently asked questions

What is the Shahdili spit?
The sand spit that runs off the eastern point of Absheron, inside the national park there — the furthest east the country goes, and almost empty.
Will we see Caspian seals?
Sometimes. They are wild animals on an open sea and we do not guarantee them. The cooler months are better; ask us what has been showing up around your dates.
Are there flamingos?
In the right season, yes, standing in the shallows either side of the spit. Like the seals, they are a likelihood rather than a promise.
How hard is the walking?
Flat but soft. There is no climbing at all, and there is also no shade — sand is more tiring than a path and the sun is unfiltered.
How long is the tour?
Six hours from the meeting point back to it, most of that outdoors on the peninsula.
Is the national park entry included?
Ask us for your date and we will confirm the arrangement rather than state a policy on a page that could be out of date.
Can we book it privately?
₼170 for one, ₼220 for two, ₼250 for three — against ₼95 a seat shared, so it makes sense from two people up.
How long does the Absheron tour take?
The tour takes approximately 6 hours.
Where does the tour depart from?
The tour departs from 1 Azerbaijan Avenue, Baku (parking); on a private trip, hotel pickup can be agreed in advance.
What languages is the tour available in?
The tour is available in English, Russian.
How much does the tour cost?
Pricing starts at ₼ 95 per person. The final price depends on your group size and the date you choose.
How do I book this tour?
You can book directly on this page — choose your date and number of travellers and confirm. Our team will then reach out to confirm the details.

    Perfect!

We really enjoyed the Shahdili Spit tour. The route was easy and relaxing, as we walked along the seashore and enjoyed the beautiful untouched coastline. The scenery was absolutely stunning, especially during sunset. Watching the sun go down over the sea while walking along such a peaceful and natural coastline was a truly beautiful experience. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy nature and see a different side of Azerbaijan.
