Overview

Most people who book this have never ridden, and the morning is built on that assumption: nobody is handed a horse and pointed at the horizon. You meet the animal first, an instructor shows you how to sit and how to stop, and you go out at a walk with him beside you.

If you have ridden before, say so when you book. The pace changes and there is open ground for it.

What the three hours are

About three hours from the meeting point and back, and it is worth being precise about how they divide, because "half a day of horse riding" is not what this is. There is a transfer out of the city at each end, twenty minutes of preparation, an hour in the saddle, and then the part most people end up talking about afterwards — the picnic.

The riding

Open, dry, low hills with long sightlines and no traffic: ground where a horse can walk on a loose rein and a beginner is never more than a few metres from the instructor. In spring it is briefly green; the rest of the year it is the colour of the hills around Baku, which photographs better than it sounds.

The picnic and the samovar

The ride ends at a table rather than at a car park. Tea comes from a samovar, which is the ordinary way to drink it here and not a performance for visitors, and it is drunk sitting down with the hills in front of you and the horses somewhere behind. It is the reason the trip is three hours instead of ninety minutes, and it is the part nobody expects to remember.

What is included

A guide who speaks English, Russian or Turkish, air-conditioned transport from the meeting point and back, and an experienced riding instructor.

Who it is not for

We would rather say this here than at the mounting block. It is an outdoor activity with an animal that has its own opinions; if large animals make you nervous, an hour will not fix that, and the day is not built around a spectator. Tell us before you book and we will be honest about it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any riding experience?
None. An instructor covers the basics first and the ride goes out at a walk with him beside you. Tell us if you have ridden before and the pace changes.
Where does the riding take place?
On open country a short drive outside Baku. We do not publish the address of the stables — it is the operator's own yard — and the group meets at 1 Azerbaijan Avenue, where the transfer out to the yard starts.
How long am I actually on the horse?
An hour. The three hours run from the meeting point and back — transfer each way, preparation, the hour of riding, and the picnic afterwards.
What is included in the price?

What is the picnic?
A sit-down stop after the riding with tea from a samovar. It is why the trip runs three hours rather than ninety minutes.
What should I wear?
Trousers that cover the leg, and shoes that close. A small heel helps and is not required; the stables hand out the rest.
