Overview

The country around Baku is dry, open and creased into low hills, which is terrible for farming and close to ideal for riding. There are no fences to speak of, the tracks are unpaved and wide, and you can see where you are going for a long way ahead — which is why this works for people who have never been on a quad before.

How the ride is put together

A briefing first, then a practice lap on flat ground until the controls stop needing thought. Only then does the group head out. A guide rides in front and sets the pace to the slowest person in the group, which is the arrangement that keeps a ride enjoyable rather than a test.

You choose the distance

Between forty-five minutes and two hours, and it is a real choice rather than a formality. Forty-five minutes is enough to get out of sight of the road and back. Two hours takes you deeper into the hills and includes a longer stop at a viewpoint, which is when people start taking the helmet off for photographs.

Who this suits

No experience needed and no licence: the machines are automatic, the briefing covers everything, and the ground is forgiving. Helmets are provided. What you should bring is clothing you do not mind dusting off — the surface is dry and the person behind you will find that out.

When to go

Morning or late afternoon in summer, because there is no shade out there at all. Spring and autumn are comfortable at any hour, and the hills are green in spring for a few short weeks.
