The wet, green end of the country — tea terraces, subtropical forest and a mountain village famous for how long its people live.
Everything about the south is different. It rains there, the forest is subtropical, tea grows on the hillsides, and the mountains behind the coast belong to a different range from the ones north of Baku. It is 270 km from the capital, which is why this is a fourteen-hour day and not a nine-hour one.
A port town near the Iranian border, built around tea and rice. The tea terraces above it are the ones you have seen on the packet, and they are working plantations rather than a display.
Behind the town is one of the oldest forests on the continent — relict woodland that survived the ice ages, with ironwood and Persian oak growing nowhere else in the region. Part of it is a national park.
Forty kilometres up into the Talysh mountains, along a road that climbs steadily the whole way. Lerik is known for its longevity museum, which sounds like a curiosity and is actually a serious local record of people who lived past a hundred — including one man documented at 168 years.
Fourteen hours, and about eight of them in the vehicle. It is the longest day trip we run out of Baku and it is honest to say so up front. Groups are capped at 18, and the same route can be booked privately; then a hotel pickup is often possible if we agree it in advance.
Where else this road goes: Lahij from Baku: A Copper Village Above the Girdiman Gorge, or Gobustan, Mud Volcanoes and the Fire Sites — Full Day from Baku. Everything we run is on the day trips page.
UNESCO World Heritage listing: Hyrcanian Forests
Getting there on your own: 270 km from Baku by road. How to Get from Baku to Lankaran compares a car with a driver, the intercity bus and a guided day.

The long drive back, arriving late.
