How to Get from Baku to Khinalig

Khinalig is 230 km from Baku but four hours away, and the two numbers disagree for a reason. The first 168 km to Quba are flat highway; the last stretch is a mountain road that climbs to around 2,300 metres, and it is the part that sets the clock. The village at the top is one of the highest continuously inhabited places in the Caucasus and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2023.

There is no scheduled public transport from Baku. From Quba there are shared cars that leave when they fill rather than at a stated time, which makes them a gamble on a day trip and awkward with luggage. A car with a driver is the normal way to do it: one vehicle for the whole journey, a driver who knows the climb, and no negotiation at the halfway point. In winter the road needs clearance and sometimes closes outright — we will tell you before you book rather than after.

Because the climb is the experience, most people put Quba and the Red Village into the same day; our Khinalig and Quba day trip does exactly that with a guide. If you are going up to stay, note that Khinalig has homestays rather than hotels, and that mobile coverage is patchy above the last switchbacks.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach Khinalig from Baku?
About four hours for 230 km. Two and a half of those are the flat run to Quba; the rest is the mountain road, which cannot be hurried.
Is there a bus to Khinalig?
Not from Baku. From Quba there are shared cars, but they leave when they are full rather than to a timetable — fine if your day is open, unworkable if it is not.
Is the road difficult?
It is paved but steep and exposed, with long switchbacks. In summer any car manages it; in winter it needs clearance and can close in snow. We check conditions before the day and say so if it is off.
Can it be done in a day from Baku?
Yes — eight hours of driving plus time at the top makes a long day, which is why it is usually combined with Quba rather than done alone.
