How to Get from Baku to Ganja

Distance
330 km
Driving time
4h 30m

Ganja is 330 km west of Baku and about four and a half hours by road, which makes it the longest journey on this site. It is the country's second city, old enough to have been a capital, and it is the base most people use for Lake Goygol and for Naftalan — neither of which is reachable without a car once you arrive.

This is the one direction where the train is a genuine alternative rather than a footnote. A long-distance line runs through Ganja and its station is in the city itself, not an hour outside it the way the Sheki-line station is — so arriving by rail leaves you a short taxi from a hotel rather than stranded. Times and fares are the railway's and they change; check with them rather than with us. Intercity buses also run from Baku's main terminal and take longer than the car. A car with a driver is the answer when the journey has stops in it, or when Goygol and Naftalan are the point — and on that road there are stops worth having.

Every vehicle on this leg is quoted on request rather than from the table, and that is deliberate: at 330 km the sensible car depends on the group, the luggage and whether you are coming back the same day, and a single published figure would be wrong for most of those combinations. Tell us the shape of the trip and we will price it. If you would rather have the region explained, the two-day Ganja and Lake Goygol tour covers the drive, the city and the lake with a guide.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Baku to Ganja?
About four and a half hours for 330 km — the longest route we run. It is good road almost the whole way, which is why it is quicker per kilometre than the mountain runs.
Is there a train to Ganja?
Yes, and unusually for this country the station is in the city rather than well outside it, which makes rail a real option here. The railway publishes its own times and fares and they change with the season — check with them, not with us.
Why is the transfer price on request?
At 330 km the right vehicle depends on how many of you there are, how much luggage, and whether it is one way or a return the same day. A single number would be wrong for most of those cases, so we quote the car that actually fits.
Can we do Ganja as a day trip from Baku?
Nine hours of driving in one day, before you have seen anything. It is possible and we will do it, but Ganja is the one direction where almost everyone is better off staying a night.
What else is near Ganja?
Lake Goygol, in the mountains south of the city, and Naftalan with its oil baths. Neither has useful public transport from Ganja, so if they are on your list the car earns its money after you arrive, not just on the way.
