From Shamakhi to the Airport

Just under two hours for 135 km, down out of the vineyards and onto the airport road without entering Baku; the road and its sights are on the Baku to Shamakhi page. Of the mountain towns this is the closest to the terminal, which makes the flight arithmetic the gentlest of the group: three hours before an international departure plus two of road is five, so even a morning flight does not demand a night departure.

The bus runs from Shamakhi to Baku often enough to be useful, and on a short leg it is a fair saving — but it ends at a bus terminal, not the airport, and a city crossing with luggage against a check-in deadline is where fair savings stop being fair. On request, because the fare turns on whether the car waited here or is being sent, and because a stop at Diri Baba on the way down is a different journey from a straight run.

Frequently asked questions

What time should we leave Shamakhi?
Five hours before departure is comfortable: two of road and three at the airport. A nine o'clock flight means leaving around four, which is early but not the middle of the night.
Do we go through Baku?
No. The western road meets the airport road on the northern side, so the city centre is avoided entirely.
Is the bus an option before a flight?
With a generous margin, yes — it is frequent and short. But it stops at a bus terminal in Baku and leaves you to cross the city to the airport with your luggage.
Can we stop at Diri Baba on the way?
It is fifteen minutes out of Shamakhi and right on the road, so twenty minutes covers it. Only if the flight allows — say so when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
