An hour and three quarters for 125 km, downhill out of the vineyards and onto the plain; the road and what stands beside it are on the Baku to Shamakhi page. It is the shortest of the mountain returns, which makes it the one you can leave late and still have an evening in Baku.

The bus deserves a serious look here. Services run from Shamakhi's station back to Baku often enough to be practical, and on a short leg with light luggage the difference in comfort is smaller than the difference in price. What the bus cannot do is collect you from the observatory, from Yeddi Gumbaz or from Diri Baba on the way down — all of them outside the town, all of them places people actually finish the day. A car is quoted on request, because a return alone and a return with two stops written into it are not the same journey.

How long is Shamakhi to Baku?
About an hour and three quarters for 125 km. The descent is quicker than the climb, and the only slow part is the last stretch into Baku in the evening.
Is the bus a fair alternative?
On this leg, yes. It runs often enough from the town station and the journey is short. It will not collect you from the observatory or from Diri Baba, which is where a lot of days actually end.
Can we stop at Diri Baba on the way back?
Yes, and it is the natural place to. It sits right on the road about fifteen minutes out of Shamakhi, and twenty minutes there and back is enough. Say so when you book and it is written into the price.
Will we make an evening in Baku?
Comfortably. Leaving Shamakhi mid-afternoon puts you back before the evening properly starts — this is the mountain direction that does not eat the whole day.
