Getting Back to Baku from Lahij

Distance
190 km
Driving time
3h

Three hours for 190 km, and the first twenty kilometres are the gorge road in reverse — narrow, winding and not to be hurried whatever your schedule says. The road and the village are on the Baku to Lahij page; what matters going back is that you are starting from a village, and that the descent is the part that sets your departure time rather than the distance.

There is nothing through from Lahij. The way out on public transport is a local minibus down to Ismayilli and then an intercity bus, and the minibus leaves when it fills rather than at a stated hour. That works if the rest of your week is open. It does not work if something in Baku is expecting you, and with luggage down a cobbled street to a stand that may not have a vehicle on it, it is a poor start to a three-hour journey. A car is quoted on request: the gorge decides which vehicle is sensible, and that changes with the season.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long is Lahij to Baku?
About three hours for 190 km. The first twenty kilometres down the gorge take a disproportionate share of it — the rest is ordinary highway.
Is there a bus from Lahij?
Not a through one. A local minibus goes down to Ismayilli when it has enough passengers, and from there intercity buses run to Baku. Fine with a loose schedule; unworkable with a fixed one.
Why is the price on request?
The gorge road decides which vehicle makes sense, and that changes with the season and the weather. We quote the car that fits rather than publish a figure that might not apply on the day.
Can the driver collect us from the guesthouse?
Yes. Lahij has guesthouses rather than hotels and the streets are cobbled and narrow, so tell us which house and we will work out where the car can actually stand.
