How to Get from Baku to Lahij

Distance
190 km
Driving time
3h

Lahij is 190 km from Baku and about three hours away: the western highway as far as Ismayilli, then a narrow road along the Girdimanchay gorge that climbs the last twenty kilometres. The village at the end is a coppersmith town with cobbled streets and a water system laid centuries ago, and it sits at around 1,200 metres.

A car with a driver takes the gorge road without a change of vehicle and waits while you walk the village, which on a place this size means two or three hours. Public transport does not run from Baku directly: you would take an intercity bus to Ismayilli and then a local minibus that goes when it goes — possible, but not something to build a return ticket around. The gorge road is also the reason we quote this leg on request rather than from a table: what it costs depends on the vehicle that suits the season.

The road passes Shamakhi on the way, so the two combine naturally. If you want the village explained rather than just reached, the Lahij day trip runs it with a guide and includes the workshops; the transfer is the right choice if you are staying overnight or carrying on to Gabala afterwards.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Baku to Lahij?
About three hours for 190 km. The last twenty kilometres along the gorge are slow by nature — narrow, winding and worth it.
Is there public transport to Lahij?
Not directly from Baku. There are buses to Ismayilli and then local minibuses up to the village, which leave when they fill. It works if your schedule is loose; it does not if you have a return to catch.
Why is the price given on request?
The gorge road decides which vehicle is sensible, and that changes with the season and the weather. We quote the car that fits rather than publishing a number that might not apply on the day.
How long do people spend in Lahij?
Two to three hours covers the main street, the workshops and the mosque at an unhurried pace. Staying the night is possible — there are guesthouses rather than hotels.
