Getting Down from Khinalig to Quba

Distance
60 km
Driving time
1h 30m

Sixty kilometres in ninety minutes, and the ratio is the same going down as coming up — this is a road that sets its own pace whatever the map says. The gorge, the climb and the village are on the Quba to Khinalig page; what changes on the descent is that you are starting from a village with no scheduled service and finishing where the highway begins.

Shared cars go down when they fill. That is a different proposition from finding one going up: at the top there are fewer people and fewer vehicles, so "when it fills" can mean a long wait, and with luggage in a village of narrow lanes it is not a wait you can spend usefully. A booked car comes to the house at the hour you name and carries straight on to Quba or to Baku. Quoted on request, and in winter the road is checked before the date rather than on it — if it is shut we say so and move you.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

Somewhere not on this list, several stops, or a driver for the whole day? Tell us the route

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

Why does 60 km take ninety minutes?
Because it is a mountain road with long switchbacks, and the descent is no quicker than the climb — brakes and blind corners set the pace, not the distance.
Can we get a shared car down?
Usually, but they leave when they are full and at the top there are fewer passengers to fill them. Fine with an open day, a gamble if anything is waiting for you below.
Does the driver come to the guesthouse?
Yes. Khinalig has homestays rather than hotels and the lanes are narrow, so tell us which house and we will work out where the car can stand.
What happens in winter?
The road can close in snow. We check conditions before your date rather than on the morning, and if it is shut we say so and move you instead of starting the descent to find out.
