How to Get from Quba to Khinalig

Distance
60 km
Driving time
1h 30m

Sixty kilometres in ninety minutes, and that ratio is the whole description: this is the only leg on the site where the time is set by the road rather than the distance. It leaves Quba, follows the Gudyalchay gorge, narrows, and climbs to a village above two thousand metres that keeps its own language.

There is no scheduled service. From Quba there are shared cars that leave when they fill rather than at a stated time — workable if your day is open, a gamble if you have anything to catch, and awkward with luggage. A car with a driver is quoted on request, and ask for the SUV: on this climb ground clearance stops being a preference, and in winter the road can close without much notice — we will tell you what it is doing before you commit to a date. Khinalig and the Koch Yolu, the droving route below it, were inscribed by UNESCO in 2023. The Khinalig and Quba day does the whole thing from Baku with a guide.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

Why does 60 km take ninety minutes?
Because it is a mountain road. It leaves Quba, follows the gorge, narrows and climbs steadily to over two thousand metres. The distance is the least of it.
Is there transport from Quba to Khinalig?
Shared cars, which leave when they are full rather than to a timetable. Fine if your day is open; not if you have a return to catch, and awkward with luggage.
Do we need a four-wheel drive?
Ask for the SUV. In summer an ordinary car manages it; on this climb clearance stops being a preference the moment the weather turns, and in winter the road can close outright.
Can this be combined with Quba itself?
Almost everyone does. The Khinalig and Quba day covers the town, the Red Village and the mountain road from Baku with a guide, which saves arranging the second leg on arrival.
