Getting Back to Baku from Khinalig

Distance
230 km
Driving time
4h

Four hours for 230 km, and as on the way up the numbers disagree for a reason — the descent to Quba is ninety minutes of mountain road before the highway starts. The Baku to Khinalig page describes the road; what matters going down is that you are starting from a village rather than a town.

Getting out is harder than getting in. There is no scheduled service, and the shared cars that run to Quba fill from the village — which means they go when there are enough people going, not when you need to leave. That is fine on an open day and a real problem if something is waiting for you in Baku. A booked car comes to the house you stayed in at the hour you name, which on a mountain with patchy phone coverage is most of what you are paying for. It is quoted on request because a car that stayed overnight and one driven up empty to fetch you are different journeys.

What each car costs on this road

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

What the price covers

  • The whole car, whether there are two of you or six
  • Collection at your address, not at a station
  • Fuel, road tolls and parking — nothing added at the end
  • A price agreed before you set off, with no meter running

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive down to Baku?
About four hours for 230 km. The first ninety minutes are the mountain road down to Quba; the rest is highway and goes quickly.
Can we get a shared car down to Quba?
Usually, but not on demand. They leave from the village when they have enough passengers, so the departure is theirs to decide rather than yours. With a flight or a fixed plan in Baku, that is a risk rather than a saving.
What happens if the weather turns?
In winter the road can close, and we watch it rather than waiting for you to ask. If it is shut we say so and move the date — the one thing we will not do is start the climb to find out.
Does the driver come to the guesthouse?
Yes. Khinalig has homestays rather than hotels and the lanes are narrow, so tell us the house and we will work out where the car can actually stand.
