Getting Back to Baku from Shahdag

Distance
200 km
Driving time
3h

Three hours for 200 km: the mountain road down to Quba, then the fast coastal highway. The climb and the resort are on the Baku to Shahdag page. Coming down, the road is the easy part and the luggage is not — you are leaving a resort, and whatever you arrived with has usually gained a pair of skis or a board on the way.

Nothing scheduled leaves a ski resort. To use a bus you would first get yourself down to Quba, which in January, with that luggage, is a taxi negotiated at the lifts at whatever the hour dictates. From Quba the buses to Baku are frequent and cheap, and if you are travelling light and not chasing a plane that combination genuinely works. A car takes the whole thing in one movement from the hotel door, and is quoted on request because a car that waited for you at the resort and one sent up empty are different journeys.

What each car costs on this road

Vehicle Vehicle class seats bags Per vehicle Details & booking
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — Eighteen Seats Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — Eighteen Seats Comfort 18 — On request
Mercedes-Benz Vito — Seven Seats, Quoted per Trip Mercedes-Benz Vito — Seven Seats, Quoted per Trip Comfort 7 — On request

Prices are per car, not per seat — which is why four people usually pay less each than four bus tickets plus the taxi at the far end. There is no separate one-way rate: a day trip comes back the same day, and if the car stays with you longer, the nights are added on the booking form.

Frequently asked questions

How long is Shahdag to Baku?
About three hours for 200 km. The descent to Quba is the slow half; after that it is fast highway all the way into the city.
Is there a bus from the resort?
Not from the resort itself. You would have to get down to Quba first — a taxi arranged at the lifts — and from there buses to Baku are frequent. With ski luggage in January that first step is the one people regret.
Can we make a flight the same day?
Yes, with room to spare. Three hours down plus half an hour to the terminal plus three hours before an international departure: leaving Shahdag in the morning covers an evening flight comfortably.
Does the car come to the hotel?
To the door. The resort hotels sit at the foot of the lifts and the access road is maintained, so pickup is where you are staying rather than at a car park lower down.
