Baku as a Base: One Hotel, the Whole Country

Everything worth seeing returns to Baku the same evening except one trip. The four roads out of the city, and how to combine days without driving the same road twice.

Baku as a Base: One Hotel, the Whole Country

Azerbaijan is one of the few countries where you can see almost everything worth seeing without ever packing again. Baku is not merely the capital; it is the only place most visitors need to sleep, because everything else is a day away and back.

That is a geography fact rather than a sales line, and it changes how you should plan.

What one hotel in Baku reaches

Away from the cityWhat that gets you
2 hoursThe old city, or Baku after dark
8 hoursGobustan, the mud volcanoes and the fire sites
9 hoursLahij, up the Girdiman gorge
12 hoursShahdag, Khinalig or Gabala and Shamakhi
13–14 hoursSheki, or Lankaran and Lerik
2 daysGanja and Lake Göygöl — the one that sleeps away

Three of Azerbaijan's four UNESCO sites are in that list, and the fourth is the walk. We set them out in every UNESCO site in Azerbaijan, from Baku.

The four roads out of Baku

This is the part that decides a good week from a tiring one. Almost everything leaves the city on one of four corridors, and two trips on the same corridor means driving the same motorway twice.

West, through Shamakhi. Lahij, Gabala and Shamakhi and Sheki all start along the same highway and separate only later. Doing two of them on consecutive days means the first two hours are identical both mornings.

North, above Quba. Khinalig and Shahdag and the Candy Cane hills. Different mountains, same direction.

South along the coast. Lankaran and Lerik, four hours down the Caspian shore, and nothing else goes that way.

The Absheron, on the city's doorstep. Gobustan and the fire sites — short, south-west, and the natural first day out.

Sequences that work

Two days out. Gobustan and then Lahij: eight hours and nine, different directions, and neither eats the evening.

Three. Add Khinalig — north, and the most different thing in the catalogue from the other two.

Four. Put Sheki in, but not next to Lahij or Gabala, and not the day before a flight. Thirteen hours is thirteen hours.

Five or more. Break the pattern with the two-day Ganja trip rather than stacking a fifth long day. Sleeping outside Baku once, in the middle of a week of day trips, is the thing that makes the week feel shorter than it is.

And put a two-hour city trip between two long days. Baku after dark is what a rest day looks like when you do not want to waste one.

The exception

Ganja is 370 km west, which is four and a half hours each way. It can be done in a day and we do not sell it that way, because a one-day version leaves Baku before dawn and spends nine hours driving to look at things for four. The two-day trip sleeps there, which is the only night away this catalogue asks for.

Why not move hotel anyway

Because unpacking twice costs you most of two days, and because the regional towns are not where the rooms are. Sheki and Gabala have hotels; Khinalig, Lahij and Lerik have far fewer, and the drive to them from a regional base is not much shorter than the drive from Baku. Basing in one city also means you can decide the night before, which is worth more than it sounds when a mountain road is closed or the weather turns.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to change hotels to see Azerbaijan?

Not for anything in this catalogue except Ganja. Every other route we run returns to Baku the same evening, including Sheki and Lankaran at thirteen and fourteen hours.

How many day trips can I do in a week?

Four long ones is comfortable, five is a lot, and six is a week you will remember as a car. Put a short city tour between the long days rather than a rest day doing nothing.

Can I do two long day trips back to back?

You can, but not on the same corridor — Lahij and Sheki both leave along the Shamakhi highway, so consecutive days start identically. Alternate directions instead.

What should the first day out of the city be?

Gobustan. Eight hours makes it the shortest of the full days, it is the closest, and it covers what Azerbaijan is best known for abroad.

Is Ganja possible as a day trip?

Physically yes, sensibly no: nine hours of driving to see a city for four. We sell it as two days with a hotel in the middle for that reason.

Where should I stay in Baku for tours?

Anywhere central. Most shared departures meet at 1 Azerbaijan Avenue (each tour page names its own point), and on a private trip a hotel pickup can often be arranged in advance, so the address matters less than the ability to be somewhere at nine. If that hotel is close to a station, riding the metro to the meeting point is the cheapest way to get there.

Before you plan the week

Start from the hours: how long each trip actually takes. Then what each costs, because several days together is where the private arithmetic starts to matter.

The full list is on the day trips page, with the longer routes under multi-day tours.

Want to see it for yourself?

The trips above are run from Baku by our team: guides who speak English and Russian, a group of up to eighteen or a private car, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before a day trip.
