What the 2024 reconstruction changed
The garden was founded in 1934 and spent most of its life under the Academy of Sciences; since January 2022 it has been a public legal entity under the head of the Baku City Executive Power. After a long rebuild it was reopened at a ceremony on 28 November 2024 and has taken visitors since 5 December 2024. The grounds grew from 39 to 45 hectares, of which roughly 26 are green.
The rebuild added modern greenhouses with a fountain and repaired the old ones. New are a lake complex, an observation deck, a green zone laid out as a labyrinth, a children's play area and two restaurants. The crescent-shaped administrative building, part of the garden's history, has been restored, as has the old entrance, and a 650-metre pedestrian bridge with a lift was built. Fresh footpaths, benches and lighting run across the whole site.
What to see
A good loop starts in the greenhouses, carries on down to the lake and finishes at the observation deck. With children, the play area and the labyrinth are the obvious stops.
The plants are the reason the place exists. In a 2017 interview the garden's director spoke of more than 2,500 trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, around 130 protected rare species, a large rose collection that includes varieties bred on site, and pines over a hundred years old, grouped by the flora of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus, the Talysh mountains, Central Asia and East Asia. Those numbers come from before the expansion, so read them as a sense of scale, not a current count.
Getting there
The easiest way is a taxi or a ride-hailing car: from Fountain Square it is about 4.3 km, roughly 7–8 minutes when the roads are clear, and a little shorter on the way back. The app quotes the price up front, and our guide to taxis in Baku explains how those fares are worked out. If you drive, the garden has its own car park.
We could not find an official, up-to-date list of the city bus routes that stop at the garden, so we name none here; check a route app on the day. For moving around the rest of the city, our page on the Baku metro and the BakıKart covers fares and cards.
How long to stay, and a few house rules
Allow 1.5–2 hours to walk the main paths and see the greenhouses, longer if you sit down at one of the restaurants. Morning or early afternoon suits best: the gates open at 09:00, and with the closing hour quoted as 17:00 or 18:00, turning up late can leave you very little time inside.
For years the garden did not allow picnics on its grounds and asked visitors to leave before dark; ask at the entrance whether that still holds, and whether a professional photo shoot needs permission. At ₼2 the ticket hardly touches a travel budget — our Azerbaijan trip budget lists the official prices of the other main sights.
A ride there and back
We do not run a tour to the garden. If you would rather skip the taxi, write to us on WhatsApp or through the contact page, and we can arrange a car there and back on request — a hotel pickup can be part of it too, as long as we fix it with you beforehand.
